What's new for transit at the legislature's office

Welcome to Mississippi Public Transit Association!

House Bill 1771 proposes a $1.43 billion appropriation from special funds to support the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) for Fiscal Year 2026. While the bill does not explicitly earmark funds for the Public Transit Division, it does include funding for MDOT’s Office of Aeronautics and Rails, which typically houses public transit programs.

Here’s what it means in practical terms for the Public Transit Division:

  • Support: The division’s operations—especially those tied to FTA Section 5311 rural transit programs—are likely supported through the broader administrative and multimodal funding streams included in this bill.
  • No Dedicated Line Item: There’s no specific budget line for public transit, which means funding levels and allocations will be determined internally by MDOT based on federal match requirements, program needs, and strategic priorities.

You can read the full bill text on the

Mississippi Legislature’s official site and explore broader budget recommendations via the

Legislative Budget Office’s FY2026 report &  https://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2025/html/HB/1700-1799/HB1771IN.htm
